Engineering study 05 / 06

HVAC Zoning Study

An illustrative study of how rooms are grouped onto air handling units by cleanliness grade, product exposure, containment, operating schedule and recirculation strategy, and how that zoning supports the pressure cascade.

Illustrative study

This is an engineering study on a generic scenario. It shows how ALVEDA SOLUTIONS reasons through the engineering question; it is not an executed project, and it names no client, location, date, size or measured result.

Design questions

  1. 01

Which areas must not share an air handling unit because of containment, product or operating differences?

  2. 02

Where is recirculation acceptable, and where is once-through air needed?

  3. 03

How does zoning affect filtration, controls, redundancy and energy use?

Study method

  1. Step 01

Tabulate each room’s grade, exposure, containment need, schedule and heat and moisture loads.

  2. Step 02

Group compatible rooms and document the reason for every separation.

  3. Step 03

Check each group against the pressure cascade and the airlocks between zones.

  4. Step 04

Record the zoning in AHU schedules and the control philosophy for basic engineering.

What the study establishes

Illustrative study

The study demonstrates a documented way to reach AHU zoning decisions. Air volumes, setpoints and equipment sizes are not given because they are project-specific.

Stated as study intent. An engineering study on a generic scenario reports no measured result.
